Fight for Peace community projects are based on the ‘Five Pillars’ model, an integrated methodology developed with staff and young people at Fight for Peace's original project in Rio de Janeiro. The 'Five Pillars' model combines:
1) Boxing and other martial arts training and competition;
2) Formal and extra-curriculum education programmes and personal
development sessions;
3) Access to formal employment through job skills training and referrals to paid
internships;
4) Support services and targeted referrals for young people and their families;
5) Building youth leaders via participation in a youth council and leadership
training.
The 'Five Pillars' model, which was developed to overcome division amongst youth and prevent their involvement in Rio’s drug trade, is transferable to a wide range of communities affected by different manifestations of child/youth involvement in gangs, crime and organised armed violence. child/youth involvement in gangs, crime and organised armed violence.child/youth involvement in gangs, crime and organised armed.
Fight for Peace is now building on its success in Brazil and extensive international research to replicate its community based youth project in other locations around the world.
